Data transparency and control in XR and the metaverse

What are the design and policy implications of new data types and interaction modes in the metaverse?
Project
Developments in AR and VR give rise to important questions about privacy, transparency and control in immersive experiences. This project focused on exploring these questions.

In a series of Design Jams facilitated in partnership with the TTC labs and the IMDA (Infocom Media Development Authority), Craig Walker Research and Design explored what best practices in data transparency and privacy would look like in XR. On-site in Singapore and South Korea, we collaborated with APAC-based XR startups, academics, students, policymakers and external experts, developing a host of new tools, frameworks and XR prototyping techniques.

With TTC Labs we co-authored a report outlining a variety of tools and frameworks to help policymakers and product makers design responsibly, centring privacy and consent. With the metaverse being in its early stages, we need to understand the privacy implications of new data types and interaction modes and address these through best practice design and policy.
